Umagico

We camped at Alau campsite at Umagico right near the sand. We drove to Seisia for a look at the famous jetty that really does have enormous numbers of bait fish swirling around the pilons and lots of tourists and locals catching their dinner. When we got back to Umagico we decided to move into a shadier spot and after quite a bit of trouble with the hitch, eventually managed it. There was a moment when the jockey wheel fell off the brick and the caravan rolled back. Fortunately Russ had put the chains on to connect the car to the van so that held it. IF the chains hadn’t been hooked up, the van would have rolled down the incline and mowed down a tree and crashed on the rocks near the water’s edge. I had flash backs about that all night. Russ assured me that he always puts the chains on when he connects the van to the car, even for a tiny move so I will hang onto that to allay my worrying mind.

Next morning we again went out in the tinny and although we caught a lot, it was mainly small emperor and nothing big enough to warrant the work of scaling and filleting. I caught an extremely thin long fish with huge bottom teeth and that covered Russ’s hands in slime when he carefully took it off the hook. The sand at the boat ramp (evidence that other people put their boat in here was the only sense in which it was a boat ramp) was very soft and Russ had to use his winch to get the car out after loading the tinny. There were 3 Palm Cockatoos in the camp ground and one spent a lot of time eating some sort of fruit/nuts right near our van. And of course we managed to get some great video of this.

We were thrilled to get our satellite working and watched “The Dressmaker” on TV.

At last we've seen the reef egret - which interestingly can be dark grey or white.

The Palm Cockatoo used the left foot to hold the seed in place and use the solid top beach to crack the seed open.
