2015 trip to SA - Home to Beachport in SA

Very early on 7th April we left home for Sydney and arrived in west Sydney at 10am to get the Chev serviced. Steve and Lynne collected us and took us to their magnificent reno in Lane Cove and lunch in Hunters Hill. After a rest in Goulbourn we took off for Melbourne, via a very tasty lunch in Benalla. The apparent short cut via Lake Eildon wasn’t quicker!!! and we arrived at David and Sally’s on the Mornington Peninsula around 830pm for a late but delicious dinner.

Lake Eildon from a steep windy gravel road.

Lots of fast catch up chat with Sally and David the next morning, was followed by a trip through Melbourne to Campbellfield to inspect our new Traveller caravan. Our new purchase was stunning and after a few changes to the pull out BBQ/outdoor kitchen, we took off into the sunset, well to Smythesdale Gardens for our first night on the road.

Our first real holiday stop was at Pelican Point, just west of Mt Gambier in SA. Our camp site was a sandy track down to the beach and we were thrilled to find such a quiet seaside spot. Little did we realise that we'd camped right next to the boat track to the beach and that we'd meet so many wonderful local people as a result of camping here.

Kym came to inspect Russ's fishing skills

After some discussion with Jason about why his tinny motor wouldn't start, he gave us 4 crayfish (lobsters) that he had just caught. Kym, who had just sold his lucrative crayfish licence, said we could get some water for our caravan tanks from his house, as he was going travelling soon and didn't need it. A real bonus considering the town was very short of water. Pud and Bev who cooked our crays and made us a fabulous cray dinner with loads of large tasty Coffin Bay oysters – both naturale and Kilpatrick. We were bowled over with their generosity and hospitality – amazing!!

Southend and Beachport are little towns just north along the coast that have stunning coastal scenery. In both places, we managed to find quiet free camp sites with 240 degree views.

An abalone fishing boat with a protective cage for the diver in the back.

Camp spot at Southend.

In Beachport we found a camp spot right on top of a big sand dune with big views to the north and south.
