Towards Alice

Its a long road with fairly scant attractions, as far as we could see. These exceptions got our attention though!

Newcastle Waters had some old buildings from the time when it was the very important crossroads of the north south, and the east west droving route. The last drive happened here in 1988 with great fanfare apparently.

Longreach Waterhole near Elliot was a magnificent overnight because of the literally thousands of pelicans and only slightly less cormorants. There were some other birds as well such as stilts and spoonbills but it was the way the pelicans moved like a massive swarm at various times of the day, presumably to catch fish, that was so stunning. The waterhole is very long and in spite of riding about 4km up waterhole, we didn’t reach the end.

Karlu Karlu, the Devil’s Marbles was stunning at sunset and we lounged and wandered around the rocks, taking pictures for hours as the light changed. The Pebbles is further north and is the women’s sacred sight. This is a small selection of the many pictures we took as the sun set and the light changed!
